Mrs. J. L. Washburn

The roots of the Duluth Woman's Club date back to 1889 as part of the growing need for women to experience cultural and civic endeavors. In 1924, Mrs. J. L. Washburn was instrumental in helping organize this single organization for women of Duluth. A constant hope of these women was to own a place they could call their own. The dream became a reality on November 4, 1936, when the Duluth Woman's Club met at its new home at 2400 East Superior Street, purchased from Alexander and Katherine Hartman.

Alexander Hartman Architect Fredrick W. Perkins of Chicago and Boston designed the Hartman home with construction beginning in 1909. Mr. Perkins had designed other well-known homes in Duluth including the "Sinclair Lewis" home, and the George Tweed and G. A. French homes. The Hartmans paid $18,000 for the home which boasted solid mahogany paneling and woodwork, a wall-sized aquamarine marble fireplace, a ballroom, a billiard room and a morning room; the leaded-glass windows afforded spectacular views of Lake Superior. The spacious, though sloping, lawns were bordered by beautiful flower gardens in the summer. Alexander and Katherine Hartman raised their family and entertained friends in these charming surroundings for 26 years.

Nearly a century later, the Duluth Woman's Club continues to be a gracious and friendly center where women enjoy many traditions while pursuing those interests nearest to their hearts.
